TAIYUAN, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Li Yuefeng, a former executive vice chairperson of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, was sentenced to life in prison for bribery.
The sentence was handed down by a court in Taiyuan, north China's Shanxi Province, on Thursday.
Li, also formerly a member of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC), has been deprived of political rights for life and all of his personal property will be confiscated, said the court ruling. His illegal gains will be recovered and turned over to the state treasury.
The court found that Li had taken advantage of his various posts, including those at the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League Central Committee and the NPC Standing Committee, to provide assistance to others in matters such as judicial case handling, payment collection, and business operations, illegally accepting money and gifts worth over 93.42 million yuan (about 13 million U.S. dollars) in return.
An open trial of the case was held on April 24. ■
