MADRID, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Spanish national basketball coach Sergio Scariolo will step down from his role following the Eurobasket this summer, Elisa Aguilar, the president of the Spanish Basketball Federation (FEB), confirmed on Wednesday.
Aguilar made the announcement during the publication of the roster for the tournament, saying "Sergio asked for a meeting and told me that the time had come to stop being the national team coach", adding that she "fully understood" the Italian had earned the moment and the opportunity to decide when he wants to leave the national team's bench.
64-year-old Scariolo is in the 10th year of his second spell as Spain national team coach, after also leading it between 2009-2012.
The Italian's time in charge has seen Spain win the 2019 World Cup, four Eurobasket titles (2009, 2011, 2015 and 2022), an Olympic silver medal (2012) and an Olympic bronze medal (2016), making him Spain's most successful coach. ■
